Welcome Inside The Wooden Block Labyrinth

What is it? It could be anything. Like Zombo.Com, we welcome you to Zombo Com The Wooden Block Labyrinth.

Hello! You’re here! Where is here? This is The Wooden Block Labyrinth, and it’s a website like the ones you used to know. It’s written and run by a pop-culture enthusiast who is enthusiastic about things that are barely culture and most definitely not pop anymore. This is a museum of stuff I think is neat, updated (hopefully) every day to amuse and inform.

Let’s face it: the internet is terrible now. It’s a bunch of walled gardens meant to keep you enraged. The world of 2024 has 300% more power-hungry wannabes in government and 100% fewer websites that end with the phrase “Ate My Balls“. While I can never aspire to be as trenchant as that august series, I hope that this website can at least provide the sort of entertainment that just-post-Eternal-September internet gave us when talking about hyper-violent video games or Hostess fruit pies.

We’ll talk about kung-fu movies, also-ran The-Next-Generation-alikes of the Syndicated 90s, long-out-of-print kids’ VHS tapes, forgotten one-hit wonders, 80s jazz records, action figures from the depths of the Kay-Bee 3-for-5 bin, and anything else that I have a deep love for and that barely exists on the current Internet. To start you off, here’s a photo of the Tiger Electronics The Rocketeer handheld LCD game:

An electronic video game of The Rocketeer. The screen shows The Rocketeer firing a gun upwards while a Nazi soldier jumps onto screen.

That’s beautiful, Cliff Secord. Good luck shooting that Nazi behind you.

We’ll post stuff like that every weekday to Insta, Facebook, and BlueSky, along with longer essays here on a less-defined basis. The Wooden Block Labyrinth is your home for all the stuff you didn’t remember you remembered and things you shouldn’t forget! I’ve been writing for the internet since the late 90s (RIP my Geocities, LiveJournal, Blogger, Tumblr, and DailyBooth accounts), and I’ve been an historian of weird stuff my whole life. The history of ephemera is my only constant hobby, and I’m glad to bring it all to you.

What I’m writing about will bounce all over the place, but be sure to check in on Fridays for:

A large block logo reading "1999@25". Behind it is a collage of images, including Dick Clark, Britney Spears, the cast of The Mummy, and a checker cab.

We’re celebrating The Last Okay Year as it celebrates its silver anniversary! From the Disaster Woodstock to Clarity, from Lola Rennt to the side characters we were sure were going to be way more important to The Phantom Menace, no stone will remain unturned, no Nap will be un-stered, no advice this side of “wear sunscreen” will be unheeded! Let’s celebrate the days of dial-up and learn from its triumphs and mistakes.

Thank you for stopping by this new take on the old internet. It’s going to be a real pleasure to write for you. We can be anything, so let’s make a space for ourselves.

Let’s do this. I’m glad you’re here, and so is this 1998 Fox Mulder action figure.

Fox Mulder from The X-Files in action figure form. He says "And then maybe we'll talk about The X-Files after the year 2000! ...Hello?"
